“You didn’t come into this world. You came out of it, like a wave from the ocean.”
“Look, here is a tree in the garden and every summer is produces apples, and we call it an apple tree because the tree “apples.” That’s what it does. Alright, now here is a solar system inside a galaxy, and one of the peculiarities of this solar system is that at least on the planet earth, the thing peoples! In just the same way that an apple tree apples!”
These two quotes by Alan Watts have recently, but deeply, embedded themselves into my consciousness – bringing with them a renewed sense of my place within nature & my absolute interconnection with it.
It often puzzles me how the human species has somehow managed to convince itself of being so isolated and separated from nature – the very thing that we are!
As I see it (and feel it within my bones), we are as much a part of nature & the planet as the leaves on a tree – or to borrow another Alan Watts quote: You and I are all as much continuous with the physical universe as a wave is continuous with the ocean. To me there is nothing pretentious, contrived or grandiose about this statement – even for a naturally sceptical (and sometimes cynical) person such as myself.
One day, when my heart ceases to beat any longer, my body will simply become part of the earth again – eventually nurturing the soil, which then gives live to everything that grows from it – thus continuing the beautiful, rhythmical cycle of nature.
I hope that one day we can realise our unbounded interconnection with nature & our responsibility to care for it – and each other.
Will Samson is a British musician exploring the middle ground between ambient, electronic, experimental & folk music – using a variety of recording techniques, which often focus heavily on the use of old tape machines & analogue equipment.
He has performed across the UK and Europe – touring and sharing stages with Kurt Vile, Shearwater, Timber Timbre, Ólafur Arnalds, Do Make Say Think, Marissa Nadler & many more.
Will’s most recent full-length album, Balance, was released in October 2012 by German label, Karaoke Kalk (Hauschka, Dakota Suite, Bill Wells) – receiving critical acclaim from music journalists throughout Europe and the UK.
Late 2013 saw the release of something rather unexpected – a collaborative EP, It Grows Again, with electronic ‘dance’ producer Tom Demac via Aus Music (UK label run by Will Saul and Ninja Tune artist, Fink).
In April 2014, Samson’s follow-up to ‘Balance’ was released in the form of a limited 12” vinyl entitled ‘Light Shadows’. The EP featured remixes by Benoit Pioulard (Kranky) & Ritornell (Karaoke Kalk).
