Description of work & Poem:
The Calling – Natural Recall Project – Poster
‘’It grows from the ground like a seed
It is a life so pure and sincere
In my feet it fosters, alongside my forelegs it climbs
In my heart it begins to blossom like a flower
Throughout my neck it whirls like a veil in vein
From stem to stem and in my lips it climbs
From twigs to fallen crops and by my eyes it mounts
Between the flora and the fauna
Faraway from the stars we are one
I am the wind that flows alongside your hills
The one that carries the rain into your caves
I am the air you breathe in
The one you seek to let in
The shady shade that craves to bloom once more
Under your leafy wings.
As when I am with you I am not I
I am someone else, someone better
What I see you see
What I taste you taste
What I smell you smell
What I hear you hear
I am who I am I say
But I am a better me
When I am with you’’
‘’The Calling’’ is a work that can be described as a portrait that represents the bond between the writer and Illustrator, with nature itself. A surrealistic visual that is foremost a hand-drawn pen and ink illustration.
As can be seen, the general concept and idea was to create a work that will take the form of a tree with deep roots and branches and some flowers during the transformation of the tree into a female portrait. The flowers and the large branches are extremely vital as they signify the shape of the lips, the nose, the eyes and the ears, which is the most essential detail, as this is the main connection of the affinity between nature and man.’’ What I see you see, what I taste you taste, what I smell you smell, what I hear you hear’’ Everything in life gives roots. Trees and flowers from their nature have roots but metaphorically also animals have roots as they belong to the earth, they were born, grown and departed within the natural life. Ideas have roots, which are small seeds that linger in the brain. In some religions, it is believed that man was made from water and sand, two constituents that are fundamental for earth. Crops are seeds that grow within earth; water gives them life, through its purity and fineness. Man is like a plant, that begins to grow from a little seed and blooms to life. It follows a journey and in the end it returns where he belongs and to fall into a Slow-wave sleep.
In addition, I first wrote the poem and I tried to give it a surrealistic approach. Many things are left out from the visual with the intention of giving the viewer the chance to think long and deeply and to provide a purpose. When this significance is connected then life is better, nature can nurture herself and man can feel true affinity towards her.
Melpomeni Chatzipanagiotou was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. She has obtained a BA (Hons) Degree in Graphic Design from AAS COLLEGE (UCLAN University England). Meni has a distinct hand-drawn Pen & Ink illustration style; she also works with Watercolors and as a Paper-cut Artist. Meni is a devoted Designer, Illustrator and a Creative Writer at heart; she views Art as a means to express her visions, ideas and thoughts.
Throughout her years of studying Graphic Design, it gave her the opportunity to explore her skills deeper. She discovered that communication was an essential aspect of the process creating successful designs. Those activities led her to the decision to specialize more in illustration and to broaden her horizons within the creative industry on a professional level and to be able to explore the urge to communicate through a piece of drawing.
Meni enjoys reading books relative to her subject but also about environmental aspirations, ecology and nature. She is extremely fond of surrealistic art and narrative books that have a surrealistic approach. Moreover, she appreciates long walks in the fields, as the town she was raised in is surrounded by natural life. That had a great effect on her work, as an illustrator as in most of her hand-drawn works trees, flowers and animals are represented. Her favorite seasons are Autumn and Winter.
